˹O Prophet!˺ Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity. That is purer for them. Surely Allah is All-Aware of what they do.

And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity, and not to reveal their adornments except what normally appears. Let them draw their veils over their chests, and not reveal their ˹hidden˺ adornments except to their husbands, their fathers, their fathers-in-law, their sons, their stepsons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons or sisters’ sons, their fellow women, those ˹bondwomen˺ in their possession, male attendants with no desire, or children who are still unaware of women’s nakedness. Let them not stomp their feet, drawing attention to their hidden adornments. Turn to Allah in repentance all together, O  believers, so that you may be successful.

24:30-31

Today’s reflection in life came about when I suddenly had an urge to watch a drama. Any drama will do as it has been so long since I binged watched any. I used to think that my brother was being extreme as he was the first to unsubscribe from Netflix. But mashaAllah, his relentless advice to unsubscribe finally opened my heart. My husband, may Allah bless and protect him, and I agreed to unsubscribe from Netflix to focus on so many other resources that we have subscribed to, such as Alqudwah Academy’s lectures, a part-time diploma, and many other beautifully curated podcasts about our religion. It is truly a matter of choosing what matters most in these end of times. Ya Rabb, guide us.

Another incident which has been viral online is about an actor with so many controversies around him. I casually said, only Alif Satar je yang ok. May Allah preserve him. Which invited a disapproving look from dear Zauji (my husband). I quickly reflected on how I would feel if the roles were reversed. How would I feel if my husband praises another lady? Although we have good intention in praising the person, I quickly made a mental note not to praise the opposite gender and suffice it is to silently pray for others. This may seem strange to some, especially in a world where humans openly share their love and joy for influencers (k-pop artists and the likes), but my husband has inculcated and taught me about exercising the 2 verses of Surah Nur into our lives as husband and wife.

It is amazing how Allah nurtures us to preserve our gaze. To lower them. Because everything starts from what we see. Lowering of our gaze goes beyond physically gazing at a person to include watching online pictures, videos and dramas of one’s favourite actor/actress – which is so rampant today. Truly the eyes are windows to our hearts.

Thus, by protecting our eyes from admiring influencers online, we hope it can protect our marriage, our hearts. May only halal love fill our hearts. May we only love, what Allah loves.

So goodbye entertainment of this world, it’s been months, alhamdulillah! I truly pray that Allah keeps us steadfast on this journey to return back to Him. Let’s protect our hearts and utilise our limited time here on Earth.

Pray for each other ok?

With love and prayers for those oppressed, Insyirah.
