Race.

“I want to ask you a question. Do you think that there will ever be a period of time where all of us will look each other in the eye, beyond our differences, and are connected together as, earthlings?”

Prof’s question was followed by a deafening silence.

“There can only be one way to do it. If all of us acknowledge 1 common enemy.”

I was honestly stunned beyond words.

Well of course her definition of what constitutes as an enemy is different than mine.

We covered the topic on race and ethnicity. Prof ended the class with a privilege questionnaire that got me thinking. The questionnaire revealed how restricted my circle of friends are. I do have friends from other races but they’re mostly classmates or hi-bye-along-the-corridors kind. Or days-from-camp kind.

I chose my circle of friends for the past 4 years. If there is one thing that I wish I could have done better at is how I should have tried to be friends with more people beyond my comfort zone. I was never the type to hang out or have outings beyond campus. So when a beloved senior shared with me her journey, I realised I lacked in that area. (on second thought, I have my #xiaobabes eh..hmm..oh well, allow me to just rant here)

But then again, SMU has always reminded us that it’s a different journey for every single one of us.

So alhamdulillah for everything.

We barely scratched the race card. All of us? We are merely work in progress, this beloved nation.

  1. Well being in SMU itself is already pushing yourself from your initial comfort zone kan?

Joining different events, activities, CCAs are other proofs that you have indeed tried to push yourself even further…

So don’t have to regret that too much! But good that you reflect on it, so that you can look to work on it on ur next phase, perhaps in the workforce? Insyaallah.

More opportunities lie ahead for us to keep pushing ourselves, slowly growing, insyaallah.
