The Salam – an act of kindness the door to silent prayers.

So I chanced upon Cik M the other day. He took great care in his interactions with the opposite gender that he only replied my salam without a second glance at me. Until I called out his name, “Cik M?” That startled him. His expression went from distant and grim to that of recognition and familiarity. Slowly carving out a friendly smile. While waiting for the amber light to change green at such a bustling road junction near Raffles City, we managed a short conversation under the relentless scorching heat of the sun.

It always takes me a great amount of self-assurance to actually initiate conversations especially if its with a guy! I don’t know how my good-natured friends do it, casually giving salams and pleasantries to my male asatizah and even cracking a joke or two! (That’s a bonus though but my intent here is to highlight the part of spreading salam and respect for others)

One has to start somewhere right? I remember my Ustazah saying how it’s important to forge good ties with the friends of our parents. Especially those who are dear to them. Building upon that intent, I took the courage to greet Cik M that fateful Friday.

When I got home that day, my dad was smiling so widely while relaying his part of the story. Apparently Cik M told his geng pakcik-pakcik in a whatsapp group after our small pleasantries and sought the prayers of soleh people to pray for me. In his words: “Dia sedang berjuang!” I felt my motivations escalate and touched by the genuine act.

A stark reminder that:

  1. Berjuang = Such a strong word to describe my current situation. Studying = berjuang? One has got to improve and reflect on her intention.
  2. No matter how bad things may go, remember, just remember that you have the whole muslim society behind you. They fund you, pray for you and are proud of you. So don’t solo and think that you’re unworthy!  Don’t EVER be selfish. Remember that despite all your sweat, stress and tears, despite when the passion dies out, or when you’re at the brink of giving up, do it for THEM.

The society may not be there physically and directly to catch us when we fall. But indirectly, we celebrate many achievements together. Collectively, we are always waiting and seeking for the next achievement by the members of our society. Much love and gratitude for this connection through our faith.

Such a blessed Friday. Alhamdulillah.

Takeaway: Never underestimate the power of salam and the prayers of those beloved to Allah. Indeed, Allah hears the silent prayers of His servants.

His smile was enough to make my day
If one could crave for sweet things,
Then both of your smiles are what I yearn for
Unlike those other cravings,
This yearning is a ticket
To finally see Your smile
In the land of everlasting happiness…
