We need more male educators.
Especially when it comes to topics like puberty. We have only 1 male trainer here and he has been occupied with coordinating our level. Hence, I was glad that both girls and boys session went well and was quite surprised by their openness!
But I’m glad I was entrusted with this curious souls on such a complex topic because I learnt and revised a lot! With Google as my constant companion and a lil brother and dad at home, I sought their advice about guys and puberty.
It was funny as I observed how the boys were more giggly than the girls. Especially those who have yet to go through puberty. I sense maturity at play here. Nanti dia dah kena baru dia tahu..
Me: So these are the areas where we need to shave…How about our beard?
Student A(boy): Don’t need!
Student B(boy): Teacher girls also have beard right!
Me @ student A: Why? (after answering student B hahais)
Student: More handsome.
I knew I had to validate this because his point is correct.
To me at least. But it was to also encourage my students to respond, without fear.Me: Yes that’s true. But in terms of the Islamic perspective?
Student: Follow Nabi!
Me: MashaAllah yesss. It’s sunnah!
Alhamdulillah, it was a good platform I feel for those who have experienced puberty to kind of show the ropes for those yet to experience it. 3 hours is surely not enough.
But the main takeaway, which managed to grab the attention of the class was this: Puberty may be an interesting journey of self-discovery – physically, emotionally and spiritually. As a muslim boy or girl, it is essentially, the start of an individual’s life. To be held accountable for and rewarded by the things we do and intent.
It’s both scary and exciting. Definitely a reminder to self…
Till then,
